Caren Platis |
Mrs. Platis has been a teacher for 30 years, 20 of those at Staten Island Academy. She has taught AP US History for ten years, Grade 10 US History, Grade 9 World History and electives for students in Grades 11-12 in Economics, Contemporary Communism, Gender Studies, Debate, Comparative Religions, Current Issues, Criminal Justice, International Relations and Politics, India Rising, Global Crisis-HIV/AIDS. Mrs. Platis is the current History Department Chairperson for Middle School and Upper School and serves as the Moderator for the Ivy League Model United Nations. Mrs. Platis has been an integral part of planning and chaperoning our London, England, Interdisciplinary Culture Study for Grade 9. She has been the recipient of two Richard E. Diamond Faculty Summer Grants -- one for historical research in New Orleans, LA in 2005, the other for historical research in Greece in 2009. Mrs. Platis has taken a Harvard University online enrichment course on Alternative Assessments, attended Manhattan College (1999, 2003) for AP US History Teachers, has a Masters degree in Liberal Studies, History Major, from The College of Staten Island, (1995) and a Bachelor of Arts Honors in Education, History Major, from Brooklyn College (1980). She is also a College Board Exam Reader (2004-2008), and is the proud parent of Alexis Platis, Class of 2001, who was an Academy “lifer.” |
