| The future of Staten Island Academy is in your hands.
That’s no exaggeration. If you’re reading this, something has brought you to this page, and we appreciate that you clicked. This year, Staten Island Academy celebrates its 125th anniversary! Commemorating this major milestone begs the question: "What will the Academy be like on its 250th anniversary?" The year will be 2134. Perhaps your great grandson will be a freshman in the Class of 2137 or your great-great-granddaughter will play on the Girls‘ Softball Team. What fun to imagine! This vision comes with great responsibility, and the following Web pages are dedicated to making the case that all of us, together, are responsible for the future of our school.
THE 2009-2010 ACADEMY FUND: "FULFILLING OUR PROMISE"
The annual Academy Fund is the cornerstone of Staten Island Academy’s fundraising initiatives. Academy Fund gifts provide annual support that enriches the school’s outstanding programs and activities, as well as support of our financial assistance and faculty development programs. Funds raised from the Academy Fund go directly to this year’s school operating budget, and the statistics from this year’s Fund are vital to building momentum for future giving and outside support from foundations, corporations, and major donors.
YOU AS STEWARD
The Academy has been passed down generation to generation. Not a single person who was on the campus when the school opened its doors in 1884 is alive today. As an institution, the Academy has been a torch that we have all together passed along. As the faculty changes, the Board changes, and students graduate year-after-year, the school has remained a bright light that together we keep burning. Because if we don’t do it, who will? Participation in the Academy Fund makes you a steward of that light and helps ensure that the Academy thrives well into the future.
THE VALUE OF 100% PARTICIPATION
One of this year’s primary goals is to increase participation in the Academy Fund. So many people make the mistake of thinking they must bequeath an estate to make a difference. No matter your politics, we would all be remiss if we didn’t recognize the profound impact President Obama has had in changing all of our minds about the power of small and frequent gifts. The truth is that every dollar counts. Full participation is our goal this year -- yes, 100% participation from trustees and current parents, and increased participation from alumni and other school constituencies. This is a very important objective because it helps the school solicit money from foundations, corporations, and major donors, all of whom want to see broad-based support from the school community.
BUILDING MOMENTUM FOR THE FUTURE
The Head of School and the faculty have a vision for the school -- that it not only continue to be the amazing place that it is, but that it also include, always, the best resources and equipment available. In order to meet that vision, the Academy will launch a major capital campaign at some point in the future. What we give now, as a community, will affect the school’s ability to launch such a campaign. In essence, every dollar you give today builds incredible momentum to make that vision possible. It may be 2025, 2035, or 2045, but you will have been part of it because you gave in 2010.
