THE LOVERS

I wandered in my mind’s eye
Hours past
And came upon two pedestals
Within a garden of roses
Crimson and bloodstained
There stood to my right
A childhood friend
Lost long before age would separate us
He appeared
As he always had
Full of pranks and funnies
The sight of him stirred my soul
In ways I will never fully comprehend
To my left stood
A stranger I knew by name
She had an attraction about her
I never quite understood
Perhaps it was her jocular manner
Or maybe it was not
But little did this concern me
I had other thoughts to ponder
My feet encircled
The motionless pair
While my mind was transfixed
On the scene that lay before me
I was comfortable
Though the air grew chill
And a storm threatened arrival
One set of eyes
Emitted charm and mistaken love
Whereas the second set
Portrayed a muddle of ardor and pain
I perceived I had stumbled upon
An intimate place
Fashioned exclusively for two
By means of this sudden knowledge
The air became dense
With unspoken history
I had a desire to abandon this garden
Of stinging thorns
Another force compelled me to stay
But I could not
